MySQL is a free and open source database management system(DBMS). As per latest numbers, MySQL is the most popular DBMS according to the DB-Engines Ranking. Although the MySQL Community Installer, is pretty straight forward, a few missed steps here and there can result in MySQL Workbench not executing the SQL statements. 1. Not installing dependencies

MySQL can work with installing the server and Workbench, but if you want to install its additional products as well, MySQL Community Installer is the easy alternative. The installer wizard easily navigates you through installing and configuring the products that you require.

But during installation, it requires a few prerequisites for some of the products. If these prerequisites are either not already available or not made available during installation, few of the product installations fail.

REMEDY: MySQL Installer requires Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5.2 or later. Usually the window showing the prerequisites automatically downloads and installs the required version when you click ‘Execute’ button on the window.

If you face any error installing the required versions of prerequisites on the host computer, you can download it by visiting the Microsoft website. If it is already installed make sure it is enabled in the Windows Features list available in Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows Features on or off. Usually it is enabled by default in Windows 10.

2. Not configuring the server

When the window shown below appears, sometimes we may just click on ‘Cancel’ and skip the configuration. But this is the most important step that ensures that the MySQL server is up and running.

REMEDY: Just make sure you do not miss this step. Not many changes need to be done to the recommended settings. All you need to do is set the password for the root user. You may add new users during the configuration or do it later using SQL commands.

3. Choosing the wrong authentication method

Although the method using password encryption is the recommended setting, it will not let you make connections outside of MySQL. When trying to create database tables using MySQL for Excel or R, you will get an error, citing “Authentication plugin ‘caching_sha2_password’ cannot be loaded.” That’s when you know you have chosen a wrong authentication method.

REMEDY: Either during the configuration that follows installation or later, you can reconfigure the authentication method as ‘Legacy Authentication Method’. This will ensure all connections made from R, Excel, etc. to work perfectly.

4. MySQL Server not running in services

Sometimes it is possible, that Server has stopped running. As a result, you will not be able to execute your SQL commands in Workbench. To confirm this issue, simply click on ‘Server’ in the Workbench toolbar, and select ‘Server Status’. If you see a ‘Stopped’ status, it is proof that the server is not running, which could be why the SQL commands are not executing.

REMEDY: Right-click on This PC on your computer and click on ‘Manage’. Select ‘Services and Applications’ and then ‘Services’. Scroll down the list that appears until you see your MySQL server. Click on the service and then click on start the service.

5. Not finding the right version

MySQL is available for all platforms and for 32 bit OS as well. You may face installation issues if you choose, download and try to install the wrong version.
